Most of these book reviews have appeared in newspapers and journals over the last  four years.  These are the books I found especially commendable, either because the writing is gorgeous, the story unusually gripping, or the subject itself  remarkable.  Or else, I really didn’t like them. . . .  Please let me know your feelings.
