In search of trees in literature

From The Epic of Gilgamesh to Murray Bail’s sumptuous novel Eucalyptus, trees are found in literature in many forms. Trees might signify the boundary of the physical world or offer sanctuary, places of retreat, reflection. Trees have been used over and over: characters climb trees to gain insight; writers fashion events under trees to underscore justice and injustices; trees figure in the minds of children as a world of adventure.
